There are seventeen (17) hard weather shelters located throughout Walker County. The community storm shelters are funded solely from FEMA grants and community matching grants, that are obtained by the communities. The EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY and WALKER COUNTY E-911 receives and maintains STORM SHELTER LOCATION AND SHELTER CONTACT INFORMATION ONLY within Walker County. The EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY and WALKER COUNTY E-911 do not control, operate, maintain, provide funding or management of the shelters. The map contains the predetermined locations of shelters, that may be used during a weather emergency. The community leaders and/or the Volunteer Fire Department that maintain the shelters has the sole responsibility of determining, setting and enforcement the policy and rule of each shelter. The community leaders and/or the Volunteer Fire Department set their own rules and guidelines on what constitutes an emergency and it’s their sole responsibility and determination over when the shelter and when to open and close the shelters.
